The Nigerian government has rolled out plan to permanently solve the farmers-herdsmen conflicts which has claimed the lives of thousands in the affected states over the years.
The plan tagged ‘National Livestock Transformation Plan’, was unveiled by the Secretary of the National Economic Council (NEC) sub-committee, Dr. Andrew Kwasari; at a press briefing in Abuja.
According to the plan, market-driven ranches with different cluster models would be created in each of the selected states for improved livestock productivity through breed improvement, pasture production, as well as efficient land and water productivity.
The states to benefit from the plan include Adamawa, Benue, Ebonyi, Edo, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba and Zamfara.
“A Ranch Design Plan has also been proposed in models of various sizes clustered in 94 locations in the 10 pilot states” He said
“The government intends to transition pastoralism to ranching in order to reduce the struggle for common resources.” Kwasari stressed.
Kwasari noted that the plan stemmed from meetings and recommendations by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) and the National Economic Council in 2017.
The council which was headed by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, had all state governors and ministers as members.
In his remarks, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, said the plan would be executed soon emphasised that the Federal Government was committed to ending the farmers-herdsmen crisis in the country.
“We want to bring this crisis to an end. We will begin action in a matter of days.” He said
He added that nomadic herding was not sustainable, hence the need to embrace ranching.
